Three Years

Yesterday was my three year anniversary. Jeff and I got married surrounded by all of my family and friends in my hometown and I just can’t believe it has already been three years. Part of me feels like we’ve been married forever and part of me feels like it was just yesterday I was picking out my wedding dress.

It has been quite a wonderful, busy three years. We had an incredible honeymoon in Europe, moved, completed a masters degree, added a french bulldog to the family, travelled to Boston a handful of times to see Jeff’s family, added a rescue dog to the family and our most exciting endeavour, adding our baby Ellie to the family this year. I have enjoyed every minute of these three years with Jeff and I really can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with him. So, with this third year, came a different way of celebrating. Usually we would have gone to a fancy dinner or out to a show but this year with baby in tow and nursing still under construction, we decided to relax and enjoy what we had right in front of us.

While Dad was at work, baby E and I decided to make an anniversary cake. This was a bit tricky because of my new dairy free life style (a post for another time about finding whats bugging baby E in my diet). After searching the internet and my cookbooks for a suitable dairy free recipe that would entice my husband to enjoy the cake as well, I ended up using one in the Betty Crocker (Bridal Edition- how fitting πŸ™‚ ) cookbook. Just a simple yellow cake recipe but I thought if I replaced butter with coconut oil and milk with rice milk, this might just work. Here is the recipe. It turned out tasting more like a glazed donut after I threw together a dairy free frosting that melted right off the cake. But it was yummy none-the-less. So I thought I would post the recipe here for anyone else going through some allergy/lactation issues.

Dairy Free Anniversary Cake (originally Betty Crocker’s Starlight Yellow Cake)

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 1/2 cups sugar

1/2 cup butter softened (I substituted 1/2 coconut oil)

1 1/4 cups milk (I substituted rice milk)

3 1/2 T baking powder

1 tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla extract

3 large eggs

Preheat oven to 350. Grease bottom and sides of two 9 inch round pans. In a large mixing bowl, add all ingredients and mix together with an electric mixer for 3 minutes. Pour into prepared pans. Bake for 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely and then frost to your heart’s content.

For the frosting which did not turn out the way I wanted but then ended up giving the whole cake more of a glazed donut feel :

1 cup coconut oil

4 cups confectioners sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 T rice milk

mix together until fluffy. Let sit in the refrigerator for about an hour and frost lightly.

We may not remember the cake but I think we will certainly remember the first anniversary with our sweet baby. She definitely made it a great one.

End of Summer Garden Update

Our patio garden is officially dead. The heat, the caterpillars, the mites and our lack of tending because of the presence of a certain adorable bundle of joy, have all contributed to our lack luster garden this year.

The caterpillars have eaten their fill of the mint. I just can’t seem to keep up with finding and squishing them.

The basil has all flowered and wilted and the last of the cherry tomatoes are ripening.

Even the hop plant is being eaten by bugs and looks to be on its last legs as well.

Jeff and I are thinking of scraping everything and starting up again in the fall. Maybe with some fresh herbs and fallish veggies. We shall see. Our lives are very busy right now tending to a new one and giving her as much of ourselves as we can in these special, early weeks of her life.

How is your garden looking this September?

Cloth Is A Whole New World

I have been wanting to write this post for quite some time. I even had the pictures taken before baby was born in anticipation of writing a before baby cloth diaper post and an after baby was here diaper post. I ended up going into labor and never getting to write such post. So now here we are four weeks in with a brand new baby girl and I thought I would talk about how we are doing with the cloth diapering.

For starters, cloth diapering is definitely a lifestyle. You AND your husband or partner have to be willing to put in the extra work and preparation involved with cloth. Luckily my husband seems to be enjoying cloth and I don’t mind doing laundry, in fact, it’s kind of meditative (ask me again when baby is two, if I still find laundry meditative, I’m sure my answer will be quite different). πŸ™‚

I’ll start out with my cloth diaper stash. When I was preparing to cloth diaper I read, read, read and even took a cloth diapering class. I was still confused. There are just so many types of cloth diapers these days. I thought with all my research we would be cloth diapering from day one and I thought for sure fitteds would be my favorite. I ended up not cloth diapering from day one and fitteds are definitely not my favorite.

I didn’t want to buy the popular brands out there, I wanted to support more local and handmade products. I bought part of my newborn stash on etsy and the rest of it was thankfully given to me by my wonderful cloth diapering sister-in-law. We started out with seven prefolds, about 14 fitteds, 2 G-diapers and 1 Soft Bums. We also had about six covers and 1 wool cover.

Starting from day one was out of the question already when we found out our hospital wouldn’t allow it. So we vowed to start right after we got home. We did manage to put her in cloth when we got home but only sporadically. We were still trying to figure out which diapers fit her and which we needed to save for later. After seeing the doctor a few days in, she advised us to put her in disposables until her cord fell off. (We did buy fitteds with umbilical cord snap downs too but they were still too big). So for the next week or so we had her in disposables. As soon as that cord fell off (and if came off pretty quick) we tried cloth again. Jeff really liked prefolds with a cover. I had a hard time with prefolds and still do. I liked some of the fitteds but most of them were so bulky, I felt like they would be uncomfortable for her to wear. I had picked up some G-diapers from Babies R Us that I didn’t have high hopes for, but as soon as I put them on her they were my favorite. They were easy to use, easy to clean and so trim. Her onesies actually snapped around them! I went out and bought two more. However, we are finding that she has outgrown them already after only two weeks. My next favorite is actually the soft bums diapers. They fit pretty trim as well and are easy to wash. They can also be adjusted in the leg so we are hoping she will wear these longer. I ended up adding four more Soft Bums to our stash and I’m so glad I did. She’s already wearing a few of what I thought was going to be the next size up in a few months, but she’s already in these great All In Ones from my sister-in-law called Precious Coverings. She’s had a few blow outs in these but there are so many of them and they are easy to use so we are going to continue to use them blow outs or not.

The fuzzibunz and bumgeniusΒ (that you see pictured above) are too big as of now, but I’m sure the way she’s growing we will start trying those out soon. Some of them are new but most of them are from my sister-in-law and a good friend who gave me all of her little girls stash too. We are very thankful we didn’t have to spend as much money as some people do but even if we had, I think we are still saving a handful by not using disposables.

As for organization of E’s diaper stash, we are in a very tight space right now so all the diapers are being stored wherever there is room. I have our newborn stash in one basket close to the changing table and so far that is working out.

Here are a few links to where I purchased my fitteds and others in case any one is interested. I really like some of them and I didn’t like others as much. But the care and handiwork it took to make each one of these diapers is quite something.

Brown Cow CottonΒ  – these are great organic cotton covers with PUL inside. Love these except the fact that they get dirty easily because cotton covers the PUL so you can’t just wipe it down like others, you have to wash it. The fabric is lovely and soft though and the prints she uses are darling. They also fit for quite sometime because of the snap downs. We will get a lot of use out of these.

OneLoveDiaperCo.Β – This was the most expensive diaper I purchased. It has a wool cover and organic cotton insert. It also has lovely fabrics that are handmade. I’m not too sure how wool works yet and I did have problems with pee coming right through with this diaper that I thought was supposed to hold more in? I’m still very new at this so I’m not giving up yet, I may not have lanolized it properly?

BananaBottomsΒ – this is an adorable fitted which we are still using. I love the fit, it’s not too bulky and its super soft organic cotton.

BabyCoonDesigns– this is one of our teeny tiny ones that only fit the first couple weeks. I did take out the insert which gave it a few more days of life for us, but its just too small now. I did like how it fit her. It was one of the very first diapers we put on her.

AprilsBaby– We really liked these covers. I think they are handmade in Canada but they worked great with prefolds and fitteds under them. They are just now at four weeks getting a tad bit too small for her.

31Rubies– this was another teeny tiny diaper that she only used during the first week or so. It was very soft and cuddly but I didn’t like the way the legs fit, a little too snug.

Sustainable Babyish– I had read about these diapers and so I bought one to give it a try. They were really nice, good fit and not too bulky, but she outgrew this one pretty quickly too. Check out their website. They not only have diapers but all sorts of neat baby and kid things!

we also have SoftBums, Fuzzibunz and BumGenius in the mix that you can google and usually find at your local cloth diapering store. I personally shop at Granola Babies and Rosie Posie Baby.Β

So there’s my first cloth diapering post. I will try to do one regularly, letting you know how we are doing with our cloth diapering adventure. It’s been interesting and a lot to learn and even a little fun. Hoping it will get more fun once we really get the hang of it.

She’s Here!

It has been two weeks already since I gave birth to my baby girl Eloise. What a magical two weeks it has been. Β It’s as if this little girl has been with us forever. My husband and I can not imagine our lives with out her.

After 22 hours of labor and two hours of pushing, this little miss was born at 9:59pm on August 5th. She already seems to have a spunky personality with strong lungs and adorable little facial expressions and very tender, sweet moments when she’s sleeping skin to skin against mama or daddy. I’m so thrilled to begin this new journey as mother. A role I’ve dreamed of filling ever since I was a kid swaddling my cabbage patch kids. That role is finally here and I am lapping every minute of it up…

Pillowcase Dresses

I have always wanted to make my own clothes, especially for my own children. So now that I am days away from having my own baby girl, I have been a little more eager to begin sewing for her. Being the very novice sewer that I am I set out to find the easiest pattern for a little girls dress I could. And I came across this free pattern.

The first time I tried it, I used this adorable strawberry fabric I had been saving just for baby. I think my measurements were off quite a bit and without bias tape for the arm holes the dress came out a little lopsided and small in weird places. But I was determined to make a better dress and so a couple days later I tried it again with an old pillowcase I scooped up at an antique market.

I think it came out pretty well. I still have a lot to learn about making clothes and I’m not even sure if either dress will fit her when she arrives. But, I’m glad I have begun this journey to making more than just scrap quilts. I’m following patterns and learning by doing… I hope to be learning and doing a whole lot more soon.

August Garden Journal 2012

It’s August and I thought I would do a quick garden journal before baby comes and the garden gets neglected. Although I’m hoping to add that to the list of “things visitors can do to help” – water the garden. Β The mint is steadily growing. Caterpillars are seen here and there but they are getting harder to spot and catch because of the thick growth.

I was worried we were going to lose the Home Depot Tomato. It was getting yellowish leaves and white spots on it and every day I was cutting it down to a smaller and smaller plant. But, I think I may have saved it and now it has tomatoes galore, growing steadily. The Hop plant is winding in and out of it’s trellis sticks and I’m wondering if the tomato is enjoying the company?

I thought I had lost this tomato plant too because it had broken in a significant spot, but we bent it back up as best we could and waited to see what happened. And thankfully it continued to grow and now it has little cherry tomatoes all over it. The only problem is that the tomatoes are hanging over our balcony. Picking them may become an issue as well as ripe ones dropping to our neighbors below. We would pull the plant in, but it’s so delicate, it would most likely break in half. We shall see what becomes of this one…

Another one of our saves, the ground cherry. I planted this from seed and it was so puny for so long, I didn’t have much faith in it growing. Then when it did grow, we found rust or mites on half of the plant. I cut the whole plant back to only a few green leaves and waited to see what happened. It grew back fantastically. No more mites or rust and you can see there are ground cherry husks finally growing too.

Here is our largest tomato plant which we did not do a great job at staking. It’s just getting so large, its like a tomato tree! It hasn’t produced anything for us yet and I don’t think it will. I had two of them and one of them completely died off. As you can see this plant also has some patchy yellowish brown on it. I will try to stake it better before baby comes and maybe that will help. I think it may just be too large of a plant for a tiny balcony.

The cucumbers have gone rogue. Last year I trellised them up some sticks and it worked fantastically. This year they wanted nothing to do with the fancy store bought trellis and have branched out over their trough and are working their way down and out over our balcony. I’m waiting for my neighbor to come knock on our door with all of our bounty of cucumbers and tomatoes, since that’s where most it looks like it’s going to end up. To the left of the cucumbers, I’m still waiting for that little mini pepper to turn yellow. It’s almost there and I think that may be the one pepper we get from that plant this year.

And my husband wanted me to include his pride and joy- the flowering of his hop plant. This will turn into a hop cone which will then be collected and dried for use in his home brewed beer. Very cool! These plants are crazy growers and sprawlers. The balcony railings are covered in hops, its lovely but I’m thinking we’re going to need to move soon before the hops take over the building and we get kicked out.

And I had to end the post with this funny little monkey. She loves warming herself in the sun every morning while I tend to the garden. She’s like a cat- but cuter. πŸ™‚

Happy August Gardening!

Making, Baking and Preparing

It’s finally August and I am 3 days away from my due date!

And boy am I anxious, excited and ready for baby to arrive. ( I love Nikki McClure’s August calendar. Steady is a great word for me to remember this month). It’s been difficult for me to rest even with all the end of pregnancy aches and pains. I want everything to be ready, I want to get in as much project work as I can get done before baby comes and in between all the cleaning, making and preparing, I have had the worst sugar cravings that have kept my oven and ice cream maker very busy.

I was on a roll sewing things after finishing that garden mat. I went ahead and fixed up our bathroom mat which had been partially chewed by our shepherd mix over a year ago. It was something I had always wanted to get done but never found time for. Well, with all this nesting, I decided that was something we should have in our apartment- a bath mat. It’s nothing too fancy but I cut off the chewed up ends and added some lovely green fabric to the mat and voila! we finally have a mat again.

With baby coming in a matter of days, I have been reading and you tubing up on what a cloth diaper stash should look like and making sure I know how to use cloth diapers before baby comes. We are planning on using them exclusively from the beginning, and like every thing baby related, I have been wanting to know EVERYTHING! The cloth diaper thing has already become an obsession even though our whole stash and everything we need has already been given to us by wonderful relatives and friends. I think I will have to do a whole post on cloth diapering a little later. It makes me excited just thinking about writing a post about it! I know the little things that are making me giddy these days. I think I am really turning into a mom. Β Anyway, since we are planning on embarking on the cloth diapering adventure, I thought we may as well go all out and get cloth wipes as well. I bought some on Etsy a few weeks back but then after seeing other parents you tube videos about their cloth diapering experiences, I realized I should just make wipes. After all, one of the biggest reasons why we are using cloth is to save money and what better way to save then to make it yourself, with what you have. So I put a few of them together with some old flannel I had.

I even got adventurous and tried my hand at a baby girl dress. That one didn’t turn out so well, but it was exciting putting it together. I think I may try it again. I loved that my mom and grandmothers made some of our clothes as kids and I would love to do that for my own baby. I will share that one a little later on as well.

With the end of my ninth month has come a sweet tooth I cannot escape. I have been baking A LOT. Today I wanted to share with you a recipe I felt was posted just for me! I have a ton of frozen banana’s in the fridge and have been meaning to put together some banana breads with them. unfortunately, banana bread seems to be lacking the sugar I have been craving- until this recipe popped up. Thank you Joy the baker!!!

I’ve never made anything in a skillet before but it looked easy enough. It actually one of the easiest bread/cookies I’ve ever made. However, I realized a little late my skillet was a little too large and the batter would have burned if I cooked it in the skillet. So I transferred the mixture into a loaf pan and it baked up beautifully!

I used whole wheat flour instead of all purpose and added another banana as well (because I have so many in that fridge). It is far more cookie than bread- let me tell you! Even in the loaf pan, its gooey and delicious and would be perfect warm with homemade ice cream. Which I think is precisely what I am going to do right now- my afternoon snack. Come on, it has banana’s and walnuts in it- those are good for me!

A Garden Mat

I have been wanting to make a few mats for quite a while now. One for the bathroom to replace what our shepherd mix puppy who is now a grown dog used for a dog toy one day and one for our little kitchen patio garden so we stop tracking dirt into the kitchen. I had this old towel I thought would be perfect for the patio to mix with some Anna Maria Horner scraps as well as some other miscellaneous fabric I had in my craft bureau.

I sewed the pieces simply with my sewing machine, until half way through the needle got stuck in that thick towel material, I heard a loud pop and my needle point had to be recovered in the materials. Β So, I ended up finishing the mat by hand, which actually proved to be quite relaxing and allowed me to enjoy a few tivoed shows on the couch.

The finished mat fit perfectly outside the door and now I have a pop of color to add to the garden as well as something pretty and soft we can wipe our feet on.

Garden Update – June 2012

It’s June and my balcony container garden is finally looking green and growing seemingly well. However, we are finding that with this summer heat comes the bugs. My mint, which seems to be growing quite nicely, is also being eaten alive by little green caterpillars. I am out there almost every morning, picking them off and squishing the little buggers between my fingers, but they have proved difficult to find. This morning I discovered five of them! Hopefully I can get them under control.

I have a teeny tiny yellow bell pepper growing. The plant is much smaller than last years, but it seems to be producing faster than last year’s.

Planted some new basil in that previous lettuce bin. I think it just might be hot enough for the basil now. The basil I planted earlier in the late spring did not fair very well with Β all the June gloom, but these seem to be happy so far. Hoping they last for us to make pesto with!

These are the ground cherries I started from seed. My second year trying these guys out. I didn’t plant as many as I did last year. These seem to be doing okay so far. Just waiting for the husks to turn yellow and for them to fall to try the little cherries.

And here is the first cherry tomato of the season from that crazy Home Depot tomato plant. Jeff was so gracious to model the red beauty and the two of us cut it in half and tasted the first product of the summer season. Nothing like a homegrown cherry tomato! I have about 5 different types of tomato plants this year that I grew from seed, so I am looking forward to all the different types of tomatoes we will get to try this year. Maybe I will even be able to make some tomato chutney.

I found these little wild flowers blooming this morning in the tomato container. It’s amazing they popped up because I do believe these are from our wedding wildflower mix we sprinkled over things almost 3 years ago! Even in container gardening you sometimes have surprises and this was a lovely one!

These mini cucumbers have been touch and go. I had beans planted in this container and they did horrible. The cucumbers are doing a bit better. I haven’t had one grow completely, so we shall see. I don’t think they are getting enough sun in this space, but not quite sure how to fix that on our little balcony. Lots of blooms though, so that is hopefully a good sign.

And I had to end with a picture of my husband’s pride and joy- the Hop plant. It is growing like a weed and we are hoping it slows down a bit so that we can keep it with us. They do get quite large, but it’s been fun to see it grow so quickly and twirl around things like a grape vine. My husband is eager to learn as much as he can about the plant and maybe one day we’ll be growing a lot more of them on a lot more land.

It’s the end of June, How does your garden grow?
