I received these beautiful gifts in the mail the other day from the blogger swap. (Here are the gifts I sent off). The lovely Amanda from The Life and Times of Julian and Amanda made them and I am so taken by every item! As soon as I opened the box, Ellie squealed for the hedgehog pincushion (she’s calling it a mouse). So, I took out all of the little pins and she carried it around all afternoon. I was finally able to snap a few photos of everything for today’s post. The dishcloth is exquisite! It will be lovely to hang in the kitchen and the soap, smells amazing. The buttons are darling! And they will force me to finally make Ellie a top. Or maybe I can convince my mom to make something for her with them? Or a knitting friend? It really was lovely getting all of these goodies! This swap was a delightful way to end the summer. Thank you so very much Amanda!!
Whew! What a whirlwind week and weekend that was! We sent Nana and Papa back to Boston today after a lovely, very busy two weeks. We will miss them but will actually be out that way in a few weeks, so we won’t have to wait too long to see them.
This weekend we visited the farmers market, after a few weekends missing it. We spent lots of time with Nana and Papa and took lovely walks and little hikes with them in the town they were staying in (this little hike gets you to an area where you can see seals. We got to see a few swimming in the ocean this time). And the excitement for Jeff this weekend was the picking of his hops. It’s harvest time and Jeff got to pick (with Ellie and his parents) half of what we had growing. They are currently drying in his home office. I fear our whole house is going to smell like a brewery!
It was a busy, nice weekend. We’ll be headed back east for a little late summer vacation in a few weeks, so I’m sure I’ll be revving up for that in the coming days and weeks. And I have lots of crafty things to post about in the coming days as well as some things I’m working on.
Hoping you had a lovely weekend!

eloise: Snuggled into the wagon, tucked between blanket and pillow, you look up at Gramma and give her a big grin. I love watching you interact with my Mom. You enjoy her company so very much and she loves you more than anything in the world.

The August garden is finally providing. We have tomatoes galore! (Ellie ate about 12 that she had picked herself today). The kale just keeps growing and growing. It seems we’ve finished our corn. Now I’m looking into what to do with those dried husks. We have a little bit of swiss chard for those morning omelets and lots of herbs still growing strong and keeping the honey bees happy. The Jack-be-little pumpkins are almost ready to be picked and the hops! Those glorious hops! I caught a glimpse of them in the afternoon sun the other day and had to run out and photograph them. Lush and green (even in this brownish land of California) and reaching all the way up to the top floor windows of the house. It’s a fun, full of life month in the garden. And as you can see, Ellie’s library sunflower finally bloomed. She’s one happy gardener.
This weekend we enjoyed some time with Jeff’s parents, we got the house back in order from last weekend’s birthday party and today, I had the honor of attending a beautiful memorial for one of my oldest and dearest friend’s mother, who passed away last week after a long battle with cancer. It was touching and quite surreal to be there. This friend and I have known each other since middle school and although I didn’t know her mother well, being there to celebrate her mother’s life and hug and cry with her really touched my soul. I sat next to my other dear childhood friend throughout the service, her five-week old baby cradled close in her arms, and the emotions I was feeling were so very strong. It was something else. I can’t quite put my feelings into words, at least not eloquently. Never the less, I was honored to be there and hear stories about a life well lived and loved.

eloise: We planted this sunflower months ago from a seed in a cup, we got at library storytime. This week it finally bloomed. It felt a bit symbolic to me, waiting to bloom a week after you turned two. The reminder that you are growing and blossoming as well as the world around you. Blossom and grow my little one, just not too quickly.

eloise:
“A Two Year Old”
A two-year old is so many things
a tiny discoverer of butterfly wings.
A hugger of teddies, a sweet sleepy head.
And someone to dream for in bright years ahead.
A special new person who right from the start,
has a place in the family and a coarse in your heart.
And just when you think you’ve learned all the things,
that you dear daughter is, and the joy that she brings,
a hug or a grin comes with such a sweet surprise,
that love finds you smiling with tears in your eyes.
