17/52eloise: You want to dress up in your “Wendy” dress pretty much every day. “I’m Wendy today”, you say. But you act a lot more like Peter Pan. You are asserting your independence. Bossing others around, doing things on your own and not needing our help and showing us some very big emotions. We are trying to be patient and gentle through this phase, but some days we all struggle. But, as one of your favorite books reads, “I love you when you’re angry and cross your arms and pout. I love you when you’re wild and yell and scream and shout. I love you any way you feel, no matter what you do. I love you any way you are. I love you because you’re you!” (I love you Because you’re you by Liza Baker)

eloise: Peter Pan. You love it. Everything about it. We listen to the Mary Martin soundtrack daily. You enjoy watching the Cathy Rigby stage version on Friday movie nights. You pretend to be Wendy and dance like Peter Pan and chase me around like Captain Hook (we found these “hooks” at Target the other day and as much as I’m not a plastic toy fan, how could we not buy this). We have even read bits and pieces of J.M. Barrie’s novel aloud to you. I love the magic of it all.

45/52eloise: you stroll down the block pushing your baby in the stroller. You hit a bump in the sidewalk and she slumps over in her seat. “Oh no! P.B!” You exclaim. I watch you as you kneel down beside her. “You okay baby? Oh baby. It okay.” You take her out of the seat, give her a hug and settle her back into the stroller. I love watching this empathy in your play develop. Some days I feel as if I’m failing as a mother, but then on days like this, I see, I must be doing some things right.

42/52eloise: you are looking more and more like a little kid and less like my baby these days. You want to put your shoes on and pick out your clothes all by yourself. You get quiet and sullen when you are feeling uncomfortable or sad. You throw your toys or roll around on the ground when you’re angry. You tell me “I yuv you Mama.” And hold tight to my neck when I pick you up. You tell me, “Milk makes me happy Mama.”

You helped pick Dada’s pumpkin and you found the perfect little one for you. Then you wanted to find one for Pink Baby too. I’m often bone tired at the end of the day with the non stop play and emotions and struggles this age brings. But, I am seeing a little person forming here. A sweet, spunky, loving, determined little person. And I’m just so blessed to be watching you grow.

41/52eloise: you sit in your room with a band-aid in your hand. We had walked all the way to the store on a very hot afternoon to buy you some band aids that you had requested after falling down and scraping your knee. When we bought them, you didn’t want to put one on your boo boo. In fact, you seemed frightened by the idea, that just seconds before, you had been giddy about. So we walked all the way back home carrying the box of band aids and you sat in your room holding them. Carrying them around like little paper princess medals (you chose the pink princess ones, of course). Once you figured out how to open one, you were eager to open them all. But put one on your boo boo? No way. They go on top of your pants, that way everyone can see where you have a wound. 😉
