An Afternoon Beach Jaunt

(Thank you for all the uplifting words from my weekending post. It’s hard to let go of some things when you have a vision of how you want things to be. Your words helped me take a step back and instead, breathe in all the good that’s surrounding me).

When you are feeling overwhelmed and out of sorts and like nothing is going quite like you want it to, it’s so nice to have the beach at sunset to retreat too. Ellie and I did just that this afternoon, before dinner. We snuck away and walked together down the beach. It truly filled my heart with joy, watching this little girl explore the sand between her toes, find mangled seaweed washed onto shore and run (as best as this 16 month old can) down the beach and up and down the dunes. We left all the holiday projects behind. We left the sad, yellowing Christmas tree and the half-finished cards still waiting to be sent out and we walked down the beach. I chased my sweet, active baby girl and drew her name in the sand and showed her shells and pointed out the waves and the gulls and the beautiful sun lowering into the sea. It was a glorious afternoon. A glorious Christmas-time memory I will hold dear.

Another weekend closer to Christmas. Eek. There never seems to be enough time to get everything done. Our tree is drying out quickly and for the first time, I’m not sure it’s going to make it for Christmas. I still haven’t finished my advent calendar and our Christmas cards have not gotten here for me to send out to all of you. We are behind folks. But, I did manage to squeeze in a bit of baking, reading (singing) 12 Days of Christmas about 200 times, a pre nap time walk downtown and a lovely Mom’s Night (late afternoon) Out. How was your weekend?

Holiday Mail

This week I received a lovely package from a dear friend. A dear friend whom I’ve never met. It’s amazing what online communities, like this here blog can provide. Four years ago, I had never even read a blog and here I am today and I’ve met so many amazing people through reading other blogs and being a part of online communities like Facebook. It certainly is a different social experience then I am used to, but it has definitely enriched and changed my life for the better. This week, a fellow blogger and friend knew I was coveting the knit snowflakes she had posted a pattern for (pattern? is that the right word?). Unfortunately, I don’t know how to knit and was very sad to not have anyway to bring these beautiful, cheerful things into my home. So, a couple of days ago I received a wonderful, little package filled with snowflake, knit goodness!!! What a lovely surprise! It’s such an incredible feeling getting to know all of these talented people out there in the world and then for them to share some of their talent with me… I feel very blessed. Thank you Isabel! These will be cherished for years to come!

Jingle Bells

When I taught preschool, I started collecting bells at the local antique markets, for my classroom. Every year I would bring them out around the holidays, presenting them during a group time and then allowing the children to explore their shapes and the sounds each one made. I think I also started collecting bells because of Jeff’s Mom. Every time Jeff and I would go back east to visit with his family for the holidays, we would spend Christmas Eve at a church service with his family. His mother would give us all bells to bring to the service and we would get to ring them while singing Christmas hymns. It was (and still is) a lovely tradition in his family and so a fondness for bells was born. I have around five antique bells, all with their own unique sound and look. This week I brought them out for the first time for Ellie to explore. It was fun watching her try each one out, carrying them around and ringing them for the dogs (trying to get Linus to howl most likely). I have been keeping them out in a basket on her table for her to enjoy as well as a box of jingle bells too. We’ve been singing and ringing them to Christmas music and she has been picking them up through out the week and experimenting with the cheerful sounds they make. Bells are such a magical thing.

Silver bells! What a world of merriment their melody foretells! How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, In the icy air of night! While the stars that oversprinkle All the heavens, seem to twinkle With a crystalline delight; Keeping time, time, time, In a sort of Runic rhyme, To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells From the bells, bells, bells, bells, Bells, bells, bells– From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells. -Edgar Allen Poe (1850)

It’s amazing how quick some weekends just fly by. This weekend, I found myself scrambling for time and still unable to get everything I wanted done. Saturday it rained, so we were inside for much of the day. We did get out for a chilly afternoon walk (and found pinecones). On saturday we took a drive down PCH to visit with some of my best girl friends and their families. We ate brunch, we played with blocks, we caught up on gossip. It was a nice morning. The chill has set in around these parts though and the rest of the weekend was spent in doors (or bundled up for walks in the wagon), battling ants that have made their way inside and a Christmas tree that I just can’t keep watered enough (notice the sad display of needles all over the ground in that last photo). Hoping next weekend doesn’t go as quickly. How was your weekend?

eloise: the magic of this season seems to already have had an effect on you. You are loving the Christmas tunes playing all day long. You’re eager to help Daddy cook soups and other wintery goodness and the tree has been an exciting addition to the house. You regularly pull the ornaments off and put them back on. My little Christmas elf!

– joining Jodi for the 52 project! Eek! I can’t believe we only have one more week.
