Lambie-Pie

My Mom and Dad got Ellie this adorable lamb dress for Christmas but sadly it was too small and none of the local Gap’s had it in her size. So when I realized I needed a present for my friend’s baby shower last Sunday, I knew exactly what I was getting her. That dress (in a teeny tiny size, because that just makes it even more adorable) and a matching sheepie shirt (which we ended up trading Ellie’s dress in for as well). I had been working on a little doll softie for the baby shower too but late into the evening last week, I looked at those sheepie clothes and realized what I should be making. I put the doll away and went straight to work on the lambie softie. I had never made a lamb before and used the shirt and dress as a template of sorts. It turned out quite adorable and even Ellie couldn’t let it go after she saw me taking photos of it. (I think I’m going to have to make her one as well, don’t you think?). The lambie was a hit at the baby shower and I can’t wait to see what other animals I can try my hand at.

* Lambie-Pie was made with upcycled chenille, wool felt, regular felt and fabric from my scraps bin. She was all hand sewn and embroidered. And… I’ve been going back and forth for months now. I’m thinking of starting a little etsy shop with my softies, should I take the plunge?

Oh January… I love you so,  for letting me get excited about goals and gardens and new recipes of the year and projects I want to accomplish and books I want to start and lists I continually make throughout the month….

It was another slow weekend, so I tried to take advantage and get some crafting done and some planning done, as well as some organizing and cleaning. Saturday I went to a lovely baby sprinkle for a lovely Mama friend having her second baby. It was so much fun sipping pink champagne and talking about babies and birth and all that goodness with some lovely, beautiful friends (I made the baby a Lambie softie and I’m excited to share it with you in more detail this week). Sunday Jeff worked on bottling some home-brew and fermenting Mead. It’s his first time making Mead and he’s very excited about it. My kitchen has certainly seen cleaner days however. We have been picking so many oranges and lemons off our tree lately. I’ve been giving them away by the bushel. Jeff made PHO for dinner and we took a lovely little walk around the block in the late afternoon, looking at flowers and spotting the moon in the early evening sky. Ellie insisted on holding her Daddy’s hand the whole way. How was your weekend?

A Winter-Time Treat

I really wanted to make Rice pudding for Thanksgiving. Never got around to it (I did get my Sweet Potato Pie done though). Then I thought I’d make rice pudding for Christmas. Never happened. I thought for sure I would get it done in time to ring in the New Year. And yet, somehow, I couldn’t get it made. The other day, Ellie was playing in her own play kitchen. She had been playing independently for quite some time and I realized, now is my chance. I collected my ingredients and although we did not have real Vanilla bean’s, which this recipe called for, I substituted Vanilla extract instead and voila, we had rice pudding on a Tuesday. And what’s more special than that.

Maple Ginger Rice Pudding adapted from Joy The Baker

1 cup arborio rice

4 cups whole milk (I used non fat milk because it’s what I had on hand)

1/3 cup light brown sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract (or 1 vanilla bean split and seeds scraped)

3/4 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

pinch of salt

maple syrup to taste

ginger snaps, crumbled

Place the rice, milk, sugar, vanilla, spices and salt into a medium saucepan over high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook, stirring occasionally for 25 to 30 minutes or until rice is tender. Drizzle maple syrup over the cooked pudding and top with ginger snap cookie crumbles to serve. Serve warm or cool.

Portrait Project 2014

1/52

1/52

eloise: It’s the first week of January. This is the first portrait of the New Year. You’ll be seventeen months this coming week. You love climbing up on the couch now (what you did before I snapped this photo). You love your “Pink Baby (PB)”. You are still working on getting those teeth in. You are ridiculous adorable, if I do say so myself.

“a portrait of Eloise, once a week, every week in 2014”

* I’m thrilled to be partaking in Jodi’s 52 project for a second year now. Oh what fun the first year was and what a memento we have with our 52 project book. I’m looking forward to documenting Ellie’s weeks this way and looking forward to how I will develop with my photography skills this year as well.

A Special Book

A special book made up of 52 weeks of photos arrived today! It’s such a lovely keepsake and I’m so glad I decided to go with a bigger book* than I usually go with. I spent one very, very late night working on putting this book together so we could have it for the New Year. I did not have anything organized prior to the other night and will do that very differently for the next 52 Project. My disorganization sure did make for a late night of cutting and pasting and retyping and trying to find the matching photos. But, the book got done, Ellie loves it and we spent the day enjoying the photos and the memories of last year.

* After much deliberation (or lack of time and organization, I went with Shutterfly (and their basic model in a 10 x 10 size … I wanted the photos to be the focus). Originally, I was planning on going with some one different and a little more artsy, but Shutterfly was easy and quick, I had worked with their products before and I had two coupons too (you can’t beat coupons). I’m very happy with the product.
