A Special Guest for Dinner

dinner

I don’t usually talk about my preschool teaching days here. Years of confidentiality agreements and never wanting to disturb anyone’s privacy, I’ve kept the stories of the children whom I cared for safe in my head and heart. But, last night we had a special guest for dinner, one of my former students whose family was in town for the day. And I was so excited to have her and her family over, I just had to write about it here today.

It’s strange how one can care for other people’s children with so much love and respect. I know many people who could never do it. But I often felt like I could easily adopt because of how much I loved  some of the children in my care. In fact it had been a bit of an occupational hazard for me, falling in love with other people’s children, because that was just it- they weren’t mine. I couldn’t take them home with me at the end of the day. And when certain children transitioned out of my classroom to an older classroom, it was often terribly hard for me to let them go. It wasn’t every child that  I felt this way about. I liked all of the children in my care but I didn’t love all of them. In fact it was a very small percentage of them. I had so many children come and go through my life, throughout my career, I wouldn’t have been able to handle being a preschool teacher otherwise. But there was that small handful of children who touched me. Children who connected with me on a deeper level. This little girl who came to visit was one of them. And it was so neat to watch one of my favorite students play with my own daughter. After years of caring for other children I finally have my own and my two worlds of teacher and mother collided. It was a lovely dinner and a lovely visit. An evening I will cherish as a mother and as a former preschool teacher.

A History Lesson Indeed

I grew up in California and unfortunately history was not the strong suit in the public schools I attended. I remember the one  U.S. history class I was required to take in high school was taught by the football coach who thought it best we learned from the greats like Matthew Broderick in Glory and Cuba Gooding Jr. in Tuskegee Airmen. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed every minute of my U.S. History class but I may have a skewed view of what our nation’s history really looked like.

Even with my mediocre schooling in history, I managed to gain an enjoyment for the subject and love visiting and learning about America’s past. Coming to Boston is always a lesson for me. I come back to California every time, armed with new knowledge about the history of America.

Yesterday the weather was not stellar, so we stayed close to Nana and Papa’s house and decided to finally do the John Adam’s tour (something I had always wanted to do in Jeff’s hometown and something Jeff hadn’t done since he was boy). We only made it into the Adam’s library before Ellie had other plans. Note to self: don’t ever think baby will fall asleep during a walking tour… it will most likely turn into a very upset baby and  a looky loo from other visitors until finally you decide the courteous thing would be to bow out, and exit the tour with said wailing baby and instead buy a history book on the Adams’.

We decided to take our own driving tour when Ellie finally decided to drift off to nappynap land in the car seat. As disappointing as it was to miss the house tour, I rather enjoyed driving around the town of Quincy and Braintree. Jeff pointing out not only America’s history, but his own childhood history as well. A park he used to frequent as a child, the ice cream store his brother worked at, his elementary school now the middle school. I loved being passenger to this historical ride and afterward we sat in the driveway waiting for Ellie to wake up and read passages from the books we had bought, learning even more about the establishment of this fine city. A history lesson indeed…

next day brunch

What a whirlwind of a weekend. We made our way to Plymouth, Massachusetts for my brother-in-law’s wedding… on Friday, a rehearsal, a very wet and rainy rehearsal dinner. On saturday, a lovely morning exploring the historic Plymouth and an amazing, clear, sunny and warm afternoon for a beautiful wedding! It was a different experience going to a wedding with an active ten month old but we made it through and she was a hit, my little miss flower girl. Sunday was an after wedding brunch on the shore and a sleepy drive back to Nana and Papa’s house. We have a couple more days here in Massachusetts. We are enjoying every minute of our time here and will miss all of these wonderful family members when we head back to California on Wednesday. How was your weekend?

If there was ever a place to feel truly like an American, the glorious city of Boston is that place. Every time I visit I love exploring this fantastic town. I feel like I’ve gone back in time with all the old, historical buildings and churches and I always wonder what the founding fathers (and mothers) would think of this bustling city now?

Today was Ellie’s first visit to the city of Boston. She took her first train ride into the city, watching out the windows as the houses and trees zipped by. She made friends with fellow train riders, waving to people and cooing at them. She stayed close to Mama in the ergo when we first walked through the city. She took it all in instantly, looking around at the buses, lights, nosies and masses of people walking everywhere. We went to Fanuiel Hall and Quincy Market for pizza. Then we walked all the way back to Boston Common where we sat and ate and let Ellie crawl around on the grass. The weather was warm and breezy, perfect for discovering a city for the very first time. After lunch we walked around the Common, past the Frog pond where Jeff’s family had taken me iceskating years ago. We strolled through the botanical gardens and stood in line for the Swan Boats. A delightful ride around the lake, we saw ducks with their ducklings and swans resting in the shade. Then as Ellie began to yawn, we headed back to the train and made our way home to Nana and Papa’s house for an afternoon nap. An exciting first trip to city for one little girl.

It’s the little things this week that I’m finding joy in. The first strawberries ready to be picked. Playful days in the warm sun. Tomato seedlings ready to be transplanted. Beautiful flowers on our daily walks. Broccoli heads growing even in the midst of a terrible aphid invasion. My funny dog enjoying her new spot of warmth. It’s these things and so much more that I am thankful for.

The dreary weather this weekend seemed to bring the mood down a bit. We all found ourselves a bit tired and grumpy but we managed to have some fun times too. We brought back out the jackets and warm hats and did our weekly farmers market run, warm coffee’s and chai tea’s in hand this time. We did a bit of yard sailing where I found the most magnificent chair (more on that find later this week)! There were naps in Daddy’s arms and lots of reading books (Ellie’s new favorite past time). In between lots of indoor play, I got in some cleaning and some sewing. I finally finished the new Ergo chew pads only to realize I had made the stripes going two different ways, cest la vie. And I finished a little softie for our friend’s new bundle of joy that arrived last week. We are hoping to visit and meet little Miss Avery soon (the picture is just the bunnie butt, I’ll post the rest when we meet baby Avery). We ended the weekend with a warm homemade dinner of bangers and mash. The farmers market spring peas I shucked myself which was quite fun. How was your weekend?

Windy Day Things:

Whenever it’s windy like it was today I think of Winnie the pooh.

We wanted to get maximum wind chime chiming out of today’s weather, so I made Jeff switch out the hanging plant with the wind chime. Ellie and I enjoyed hearing the chimes the rest of the day.

The clouds were beautiful on our afternoon dog walk, big, fluffy and spread out through the bright blue sky. I think I took almost twenty photos of them.

The wind makes dogs a bit crazy. Charlotte ran herself into a frenzy then passed out on the fresh, out-of-the-dryer, clean laundry waiting to be folded.

Happy “Windsday” to you!

As you can see from all the photos, we had a very busy but very fun weekend! Friday we said goodbye to Jeff’s parents as they headed back across the country to Boston. Saturday we spent the day in Los Angeles at a very special first birthday party. Ellie got to meet her two Great Uncles, cousins she had never met  and a slew of other family. It was a really lovely day! (That kitty was the handmade softie I made for the birthday girl). Sunday was Ellie’s first Easter and we had Easter dinner at our house. First we made a pit stop at the Antique market before we got a rained out and headed back home to prepare for Easter dinner. Then we enjoyed good food, family, friends, and lots of tulips and candy. It was such an exciting day, Ellie ended up falling asleep right after dinner and then waking up just in time for bedtime. It was a long, busy, lovely Easter weekend. How was yours?

Old Friends

Over the weekend I had my oldest, dearest friends over for a girls brunch. These girls and I have been friends for quite some time, some of us going on twenty years! (My that makes me feel old). I have made many memories with this group of girls, or women as we have grown up to become. We have all come a long way from when we all met. Now that we’re older and living our own lives, it’s difficult to always get together like we so often did when we were young. I have found we all walk different paths, hold different careers and sometimes differ in what we believe in but this is a loyal bunch and we’ve stayed connected. It’s a special thing to belong to a group like this and I treasure our times together.

I have always prided myself on being the memory keeper, the one with the pictures, the scrapbooks, the video clips, documenting our friendship; documenting the days of song and dance, of travels, of celebration. We spent the day eating good food, drinking afternoon mimosas and then hot tea, playing with the littlest of the groups children, discussing the futures of the ones yet to be born, chatting about new jobs and aspirations for current careers and spending plenty of time laughing and smiling over the many memories we’ve made together. It was a good day.
