Messy Fun

It’s been very hot here this week. We’ve been spending lots of time in wading pools and running around in mini sprinklers. We have also been trying out new sensory experiences. Surprisingly, my twelve plus years of working with young children never led me to cloud dough. I had heard of it but until this week, never tried making it. It was super simple to make.

Cloud Dough
About 4 cups of flour mixed with about a cup of baby oil.

It creates a lovely crumbling, soft texture that can be molded like silky wet sand or scooped and poured like dry, silky sand. Ellie loved it. We’ve been playing with it out back all week now (stored in a large, plastic tub). It does get a bit messy though. I think it’s definitely an outside experience. We will continue to enjoy it this week, I’m sure.

This Table

*My computer has been on the outs these days (thus the quietness in this space this past week and weekend) so while it’s being worked on, here is a post that I had written a few weeks ago but never published  … hoping to be back up posting regularly soon …

This table has gotten so much use since we brought it home from the antique market last October. While looking through my photos of one single day, I noticed we’d used the table in four different ways just in one day.

Ellie eats breakfast at this table sometimes. And snacks throughout the day.

Art projects are regularly set up here.

and of course it’s usually set up differently for play throughout the day. Sometimes with animals and playscapes. Sometimes with nature to count and explore.

nature table

It’s funny how a piece of furniture can be an intricate part of your day. I find Ellie at this table so very often and I love sharing this space with her and keeping it special and hers. It’s exciting to know this piece of furniture will evolve over time to be all sorts of things for her and eventually, when she grows too big for it,  maybe something else for this family entirely. But, right now, it’s Ellie’s table. Ellie’s space.

off to fly a kite

A surprise baby sprinkle for one of my oldest, dearest friends!
Dyeing eggs while watching The Wizard of Oz.
I actually tried dyeing with natural dyes (blueberries, red onion skins and an assortment of green things like avocado skins, asparagus leftovers and kale bits). The natural dyes didn’t go over too well (except for the lovely yellow the red onion skins produced) so we added some food coloring for the rest. Next year I will try and be more prepared for dyeing eggs.
Easter day was full of fun.
I hurried to finish up my Maggie bunny from this lovely blogger’s kit. I had bought it a year ago and never found the time to finish it (until now). My bunny turned out a bit haggard looking (in fact, I messed up so bad on the dress, I had to dip into my fabric stash and add some different fabric for the arms of the dress). Despite it’s appearance, Ellie didn’t seem to mind. She seemed to love it up! (Ellie’s basket also had a lovely spring green play silk from this lovely lady and a few Ostheimer animals as well as some wooden eggs from here).
We had many egg hunts. One at our home. One at Gramma and Grandpa’s house with the cousins.
I made carrot muffins, asparagus and avocado salad (one of my favorite spring recipe’s) and Jeff made his famous roasted potato salad (from here).
We ended the day with a walk and a bit of kite flying.
A very happy Easter indeed.

Weekending!

We started out the weekend with a bit of spring cleaning and then off to the farmers market (it’s become our Saturday ritual once again, which we like).
Eating fresh strawberry’s.
Listening to local fiddlers.
And then off to Gramma and Grandpa’s house where we ran Gramma ragged climbing trees and chasing Ellie around.
Sunday morning I spent with a good Mama friend, making crafts for the kids (A Mama crafting morning). Ellie seems to be enjoying her color matching game. (Thank you Heather for all the hard work you put into these and for the lovely morning!)

Then we spent the afternoon down by the Marina with Gramma and Grandpa, flying kites, drinking afternoon coffee and tasting a bit of  ice cream.

Gramma’s Easel

When I was a young child living in Hawaii (my Dad was in the air force during my early years) , my mom would take me to a local park for “play mornings”. I don’t remember much about it, but I think it was like Gymboree or Mommy and Me before there was such a thing. Anyway, at play mornings we got to do all sorts of fun things like painting and playdoh. My mom took those ideas home with her and I remember many childhood days of arts and crafts at home, my mom cooking playdoh on the stove for us or creating tabletop easels. The other day, I asked her how she made those easels so I could make one for Ellie. A couple of days later she showed up with this box, all ready for some contact paper to complete it.

She took a large box and cut it just so, to create a triangular shape, one side being larger than the other.

contact paper

Then I added some pretty contact paper to cover all of the sides of the box. And then cut two slits in the top for the clothespins to attach.

set up

I set the easel up outside (because it was such a lovely day and for easy clean up). Ellie wanted to use finger paints and not the paintbrushes so I placed the paints in a plastic bin (her palette) and let her do her thing. As you can see, she enjoyed the process very much.

Thank you Gramma (Mom)!  Just like I so enjoyed painting on an easel like this one so many years ago, I’m certain Ellie will enjoy her experiences with this homemade easel as well!

Mama’s Reading: The Trumpet of The Swan by E.B. White
I’m a big fan of Stuart Little and Charlotte’s Web (who isn’t?), but don’t recall ever reading this one. I thought it would be the perfect spring time young adult/classic this month. (I’m trying to read more young adult/classics this year- so far I’ve read Heidi, Mary Poppins and The Snow Queen).

I’m also still working on Hands Free Mama and The Dirty Life

What a glorious weekend we had. Saturday began with a trip to the farmers market. These trips used to be quick, but now are whole morning events, discovering the world around us a few toddler steps at a time. After nap we headed out to Los Angeles for a very special birthday party. (And yes that was a Cory creation on top of that birthday present). We all had such a wonderful time and Ellie especially enjoyed herself. All the balloons, the music, the petting zoo and Gramma and a slew of other relatives we hadn’t seen in a long while. It was a magical day for this little one.
Sunday we spent the day with Nana and Papa before they headed off to the airport back home to Boston. It was a wonderful afternoon spent with them and a fabulous two months of them visiting. We’ll miss them immensely (but we’ll get to see them this summer when they return for a couple of weeks).

Weekending!

This weekend we had Jeff’s sister and her husband come visit from Philly.
A nice evening at the local brewery with the whole family.
Then they were off the next day for a brewery tour up the coast while Ellie and I stayed behind and visited with my parents.
I got lots of crafting finished while Ellie played with Gramma and Grandpa (more about the crafting later).
Sunday, a bbq with both families. Lots of good food and good company.
A very quick weekend and a very quick visit with Auntie Merri and Uncle Bill!

Ordinary Blessings

It’s funny that today’s prompt is ordinary blessings, for that is precisely what I was thinking about yesterday as I sat on the edge of my daughter’s sand box, the cool breeze blowing in from the ocean, Ellie, covering my feet with scoops of sand, smiling up at me each time she’d cover up another one of my toes. The record player was on in the house, sending out a steady lull of sweet music and the faint smell of my husband’s late afternoon coffee lingered in the air. The sky was blue, the yard  green from last week’s glorious rain. I looked down at my beautiful child and I thought to myself, it doesn’t get much better than this.
