end of the day

After a long and pretty tough week, I was looking forward to a nice Mothers’ Day weekend. My little girl is still teething and needing lots of extra love and attention these days. She’s also quite the mover and the shaker and this Mama here is pretty tired from chasing her around and trying to keep her little noggin’ from bumping into too many things.  We also had quite the scare this week when our shepherd had a run in with what we think to be a feral cat who was brave enough to climb over into our yard. The cat seemed  okay as he took off after Jeff split the two apart, but our shepherd was left with scratches across his face and paws as well as a fractured tooth which had to be removed the next day. I love my animals but I don’t always like them acting like animals. After spending a day with the vet, we brought a very loopy dog home. He’s fine now and lets hope the cats stay out of our yard! While Linus was at the vet, we took Charlotte to the beach to start our weekend. We let this dog run a long the dog beach side and she loved it! It had been awhile since she had been to the beach and it was fun watching her frolic in the sand. We visited the farmers market and were excited to pick up some stone fruits already! Yum! We also enjoyed seeing friends and their babies at a house warming party and finally we spent sunday with my family including my Grandmother (Ellie’s Great Grandmother). It was a VERY hot day. Perfect for a first dip in a kiddie pool that Ellie’s Aunties picked up for her. It was nice to spend time with my family. I’m so very lucky that I have such a close relationship with them. My first Mothers Day with Ellie (outside of my tummy). It’s so neat to be able to spend Mothers Day with Ellie, my mom and my grandmother. I had gone through old pictures of when I was a baby, last night, and came across a few of my mom and grandma in a kiddie pool with me as a baby. It’s kind of magical when life replays itself with a new generation. I guess I’m finding being a mother both tough as all heck but extremely magical  and amazing the next minute. My baby girl has quite the personality already. She can be stubborn and strong-willed ( Dad says, “like her mother…” I say ” ahem… like her father.”), but at the end of the day… at the end of this long week and at the end of this lovely Mothers Day… I sat in the rocking chair, my stubborn, sweet baby cradled in my arms. Her blond hair smelling sweet and clean from the evening bath. I sat there rocking my girl to sleep and felt so very blessed and lucky to be her mother. I couldn’t help but get teary holding her and loving her so very much. This quote I came across on Jodi’s blog resonates with me so very much. I had to take it for my own and use it here today…

“The most difficult part of birth is the first year afterwards. It is the year of travail – when the soul of a woman must birth the mother inside her. The emotional labour pains of becoming a mother are far greater than the physical pangs of birth; these are the growing surges of your heart as it pushes out selfishness and fear and makes room for sacrifice and love. It is a private and silent birth of the soul, but it is no less holy than the event of childbirth, perhaps it is even more sacred.” – Joy Kusek

Happy Mothers Day to my mother, to my grandmothers and to all the mothers out there. We are all so lucky to be given this gift of Motherhood.

Doggie walks, yard sales, hot weather, cooler weather, nine month old photo shoot outtakes, driving by the fire damaged hillsides, visits with Gramma, Grandpa and Auntie Katie, listening to the Reading Rainbow theme song over and over, springing up areas of the house, a baby girl making it all the way up the stairs (yikes!) and getting a mirror for a special someone’s bedroom. These are all things that made up our weekend. How was yours?

A sunny weekend to start out and a cool, socked-in sunday to end it. We were plenty busy. A baby who’s moving, moving, moving keeping us on our toes at all times. An old friend of Jeff’s came to spend saturday with us. The Port was a wedding gift from years back we decided to open this weekend (I had a sip, too strong for my taste, but the men were happy with the wine,  steaks on the grill and a bag of pistachios). We loaded up on good things to eat at the Farmers Market and sunday was spent moving furniture and getting a toddler room ready for a little someone. It’s still a work in progress, but I will share as soon as it’s ready. How was your weekend?

The dreary weather this weekend seemed to bring the mood down a bit. We all found ourselves a bit tired and grumpy but we managed to have some fun times too. We brought back out the jackets and warm hats and did our weekly farmers market run, warm coffee’s and chai tea’s in hand this time. We did a bit of yard sailing where I found the most magnificent chair (more on that find later this week)! There were naps in Daddy’s arms and lots of reading books (Ellie’s new favorite past time). In between lots of indoor play, I got in some cleaning and some sewing. I finally finished the new Ergo chew pads only to realize I had made the stripes going two different ways, cest la vie. And I finished a little softie for our friend’s new bundle of joy that arrived last week. We are hoping to visit and meet little Miss Avery soon (the picture is just the bunnie butt, I’ll post the rest when we meet baby Avery). We ended the weekend with a warm homemade dinner of bangers and mash. The farmers market spring peas I shucked myself which was quite fun. How was your weekend?

This weekend was full of yard sailing (I found a lovely vase), new spring reading material (I am very much enjoying by the way), a new adorable bib came in the mail from a fellow blogger, and we took Ellie to the zoo for the first time! I was very excited and anxious about the whole thing. My parents and sisters decided to join us as well and it turned out to be a very nice day. Nothing to be anxious about in the least. Ellie seemed more interested in the fountains and bars surrounding the animals and it was a little hot for the animals (we didn’t see many awake) but none the less a very fun first time at the zoo for baby girl. The grandparents bought her a zoo book and our weekend ended with a just that- a zoo story before bed.

As you can see from all the photos, we had a very busy but very fun weekend! Friday we said goodbye to Jeff’s parents as they headed back across the country to Boston. Saturday we spent the day in Los Angeles at a very special first birthday party. Ellie got to meet her two Great Uncles, cousins she had never met  and a slew of other family. It was a really lovely day! (That kitty was the handmade softie I made for the birthday girl). Sunday was Ellie’s first Easter and we had Easter dinner at our house. First we made a pit stop at the Antique market before we got a rained out and headed back home to prepare for Easter dinner. Then we enjoyed good food, family, friends, and lots of tulips and candy. It was such an exciting day, Ellie ended up falling asleep right after dinner and then waking up just in time for bedtime. It was a long, busy, lovely Easter weekend. How was yours?

It was a very green weekend. Happy St. Patricks’ day to you! The fog rolled in and stayed thick until sunday afternoon. It seemed winter was upon us again. Ellie and Jeff seemed to be feeling better so we did our usual farmers market on saturday but stayed for the annual St. Patricks’ Day Parade downtown. Let me tell you, Ventura has some interesting parade people. It was fun and Ellie seemed to enjoy the marching bands and the chaos of it all. Jeff’s parents joined us and we invited them back to our place for potato and leek soup and hot cocoa. It was chilly that day! Ellie has been trying all sorts of new foods, peas, pear, squash, sweet potato. She surprisingly seems to enjoy the veggies over the fruits. I’ve been trying to add in solids regularly now these days, but it’s harder than I thought trying to make baby food and determining when to feed her etc. We’re working out the kinks as we go.

Sunday we celebrated my Mom’s birthday (it’s the 19th but she has to work). We drove up and over the grade, through the pea soup fog and into a much sunnier and warmer area of Southern California. We spent the day gardening and relaxing and enjoying each other’s company. I made a lemon pound cake for my Mom, that I couldn’t get out of the pan. We dug into it with spoons. Very Good weekend. How was yours?

It was a packed, busy weekend. The weather cooperated beautifully though and was breezy but sunny. There were quiche’s and orange pound cakes made for a girls brunch at my house. Wonderful friends came on saturday for a lovely day of chatting, good food and reminiscing. Sunday we got up late because of the time change, spending a nice morning walk along a path above the beach with the in-laws who are still in town and then hurrying off to a first birthday party at another lovely local in a park that looked out on the coastline. I finished another handmade owl for the little birthday girl and I think I’m getting better. They are getting faster and sturdier. The long weekend ended with a long nap for baby. It was a busy but lovely March weekend. How was yours?

March is here! Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit to a new month! After a pretty tiring and non-productive first week of March with a teething baby who was needing Mama a whole lot more than normal, the weekend finally came. As quickly as it came, it was gone. Jeff took his parents hiking on the Channel Islands while Ellie and I went yard-sailing with my parents. We spent lots of time outside. It was so warm, I made sun tea. More plans for our garden were made including plans for a tomato raised bed. Ellie is enjoying all sorts of new skills (sitting and reaching, scooting around) and chewing on everything (including Gramma’s chin).  Shrimp scampi made by the husband ended the weekend right. It went fast and I didn’t get nearly as much done as I would have liked but there’s always next weekend. Right? How was your weekend?

It was another busy, lovely weekend. Beginning with homemade banana bread for National Banana Bread Day, lots of silly time with Daddy, springtime flowers blooming all over the place, naps in the carrier with happy Gramma’s, homemade pizza, bottling of the home-brew, making handmade baby toys for a good friend’s shower, beautiful walks on the beach with the in-laws and to end the weekend, a wonderful “baby  sprinkle” and a day of joy and reminiscing with old, dear friends.
